Sometimes I forget that most people who use the internet are not computer
proficient. They just turn on their computer, load up some GUI mail reader
and surf the web with no real understanding of what's going on. If
something goes wrong, they don't know how to deal with it. They're suckers
for spam, viruses, advertisements, hackers, and con artists. They're used
to their own little physical reality where they can just whine enough and
things get fixed.

What motivated this posting? I wake up this morning to find several emails
from people I've never heard of posted to a list. Somehow, somebody's
mailing list had gotten onto someone else's mailing list. So everyone from
mailing list A is emailing both (well, more like 3 or 4 lists) asking to be
taken off of the list. On and on about "I didn't ask to join. Take me off."
I don't even know how I'm getting these because I'm not on ANY of the lists
listed. Anyway, several emails by people whining and complaining about
unwanted mail and people responded that they don't know what other people
are talking about and some people threatening to "report the spam to proper
authorities." Idiots. All idiots. If anyone else sends an email today, I'm
going to go off on all of them. I forget how spoiled I am to be surrounded
by computer literate people. And truely computer literate people. Not "I
can run Word and Outlook" literate.

Exposing the average person to the internet is analagous to releasing a
10 year old in downtown New York armed with a plastic spoon for defense.
